The Balearics by water
Half the calas on Menorca's south coast and most of Cabrera are unreachable by car. Espalmador isn't on any road map. The Balearic archipelago was built for chartering — and once you've spent a day at anchor in Cala Macarella with the boat to yourself, the land-based version of these islands feels incomplete. This is the curated guide.
Mallorca verfügt über die größte Charterflotte der Balearen — Segel- oder Motorboote, Tagesausflüge mit Skipper oder mehrtägige Bareboat-Törns. Die Südwestküste (Andratx → Sa Dragonera → Sant Elm) ist die klassische Tagesroute. Port d'Andratx und Palma sind die wichtigsten Charterbasen.
Der Bootsmarkt auf Ibiza teilt sich in zwei Segmente: den sommerlichen Beach-Club-Zirkus (Blue Marlin Cala Jondal, Es Torrent, Es Boldadó), der bereits im Januar ausgebucht ist, und die Erkundung der unberührten Nordküste in der Nebensaison sowie Tagesausflüge nach Formentera. Marina Botafoch und Ibiza Town sind die wichtigsten Basen.
Menorcas Calas an der Südküste sind der Grund, hier zu chartern — Cala Macarella, Macarelleta, Mitjana, Trebalúger, Pregonda. Viele sind mit dem Auto nicht erreichbar (oder erfordern lange Wanderungen). Ein Boot verändert die gesamte Inselgeometrie. Der Hafen von Mahón (der zweitgrößte Naturhafen der Welt) ist die Hauptbasis.
Die meisten Formentera-Charter starten auf Ibiza — Marina Botafoch oder Ibiza Town. Die Fahrt selbst ist Teil des Erlebnisses. La Savina (Formenteras einziger Hafen) verfügt über eine kleine, aber ausgezeichnete lokale Flotte für Halbtags-Ausflüge nach Espalmador und kleine Boote ohne Führerschein, die Sie selbst steuern können. Italienisch ist hier im Sommer die dominierende Charter-Sprache.
How chartering works in the Balearics
Skippered day charters — most foreign visitors start here. You book a boat (catamaran, motor, RIB) with a local skipper for the day. €500-2,500/day depending on size, island, and season. No certification needed. Best for first-time charterers, families, beach-club lunches.
Bareboat weekly — you skipper the boat yourself for a week-long itinerary. Requires ICC, RYA Day Skipper, or equivalent (Spain accepts foreign certifications with translation). €2,000-10,000/week base rate plus fuel and provisioning.
Private yacht with crew — the luxury segment. 50-100ft+ motor yachts with captain, deckhand, and chef. €15,000-150,000+/week in peak summer. Italian-flagged yachts dominate the Formentera/Ibiza market in August.
No-licence boats — small (under 6m, ≤15hp) rentals you pilot yourself, no certification needed. Perfect for half-day Espalmador trips from La Savina or short coves from Pollença/Mahón. €150-400/day.
